In a significant policy expansion announced on February 9, 2026, the UK Home Office has broadened the eligibility criteria for the Hong Kong British National (Overseas) visa route. This change specifically addresses the “gap” for younger adults who were previously unable to apply for the route.

Independence for Adult Children

The expansion allows adult children of BN(O) status holders, who were born on or after July 1, 1997 (and were under 18 at the time of the handover), to apply for the visa independently of their parents. Previously, many in this demographic were required to apply as part of a family unit or were ineligible if their parents did not wish to relocate.

Key Features of the Expanded Route

  • Independent Application: Eligible adult children can now apply from within the UK or overseas without needing their parents to apply at the same time.
  • Family Inclusion: Partners and dependent children of these adult applicants can also be included in the application.
  • Pathway to Citizenship: Like the standard BN(O) route, this path leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five years of residence in the UK, followed by citizenship after a further year.

The Home Office estimates that this expansion could see an additional 26,000 Hong Kongers choosing to make the UK their home over the next five years.

Commitment to Hong Kong

This move reaffirms the UK’s “moral and historic commitment” to the people of Hong Kong. It provides a clear and safe route for younger generations who may wish to build a future in the UK, ensuring that family units can remain together or reunite within the British immigration system.
